Holi Festival
The colored powder! |
Living in an intercultural family is quite awesome, things around here are never boring and it seems we are always celebrating some type of Festival or Holiday! Yesterday we celebrated one of my absolute favorite called "Holi Festival" or the "Spring Festival"
I will give you a bit of information on this festival just in case you have never heard of it before now. Holi Festival is a Hindu Festival celebrating the triumph of good over evil, and it also marks the end of the Winter Season and the start of Spring. This day you will see many people hugging one another and wishing, Happy Holi. In India the celebration usually starts with a bonfire on the eve of Holi and then the next day is know as the color day.
On color day most of the shops in India will be closed for this and the whole day is spent celebrating with songs and dance and applying colors and exchanging greetings with one another. O (my husband) told me when he was younger he would be gone the entire day during this celebration throwing colors with his friends, dancing and having fun.
So we decided this year we would celebrate in our house. I made pani puri (Indian Roadside Snack) for lunch and then we spent the rest of the day throwing colors and dancing to our music. We had so much fun and even our almost 2 year old got in on the events and she loved it. Even though we got all oiled up before the color throwing, I am pretty sure we will be washing the color away for days to come but it was well worth it.
Later on during the day after we had cleaned up (the best we could) my husband and I were poking fun at one another because we are still colored in areas. He totally looks like an alien and he has to go to work looking like that and I have green streaks throughout my hair and color in my ears! We had a blast and cant wait for our next Festival/Holiday!
